I was reading a circulation last week from one of the leading Venue Stylists headed “Is it OK to use “cheap” fabrics? The article outlined a question posed on a wedding DIY group. The couple wanted to hide some rather dated curtains and storage heaters in the venue for their wedding. They were looking for inexpensive suggestions to solve this problem.
To me and to the writer of the article the cost has to be a secondary consideration. The first priority has to be safety. For us at Best-Dressed-Events it is so important that we do a Risk Assessment at the earliest opportunity. I know people raise their eyebrows and roll their eyes at the thought of Health and Safety pocking their oar in and stopping everyone having fun.
I take the opposite view; I was at a wedding party recently when the DJ pumped up the volume having been advised not to and blew all the fuses. Dancing and partying stopped immediately as the room was plunged into darkness.
All our mains electrical kit is properly PAT tested before it goes out, and all our fabrics are flame retardant. The most frequent occasion when prospective clients groan at us is when we tell people we very seldom use real candles. There is a serious fire risk with real candles. Not one I am prepared to take. In order to get around this we have spent a lot of money on the most beautiful battery-operated candles. When folk see them, they are always happy, but it does take some explaining at the outset.
So if you want Best-Dressed-Events to put the wow factor into your event, don’t be surprised when we ask to visit your venue, and then draw up a risk assessment in respect of our involvement. It really is for the best.
